  Wecareforourkids!WeopenourlargeandcomfortableResourceCentre,from7.30amto5.30pmMondaytoThursdayandonFridaysfrom7.30amto4.00pm,asasafeandinvitingplaceforstudentstostudyincomfortwithafreecoffee,teaorMilobeforeandafterschool!Thisareaisalsoagreatbackupifparentsarerunninglateforapickup.

  RatherthanbeingallocatedaFormorHomeGroupTeacher,ourstudentsselecttheirownLearningMentorasthepersontoassistthemwithschoolissuesandhelpthemsetgoalsfortheirlearning.Becauseparentsknowthattheirchildlikesthispersonandthatthisstaffmemberhasmadeapersonalcommitmenttohelpandassisttheirchild,thisobviouslyreducesthereluctanceparentscansometimesfeelatsecondaryschooltoraiseissues.WearenotawareofanotherschoolinVictoriawhooffersthis.

  StudentsareallocatedtoaHouseoverseenbyaHeadofHousewhomonitorstheirprogressandactsintheroleofaparentalfigurereinforcingpositivebehaviourandcorrectinginappropriatebehaviour.StudentsparticipateinawidecollectionofHouseactivitiesandeventsthroughouttheyear.

  Inanyschooltherewillstillbesomeissuesthatarenoteasilyresolved.WhilstwehaveexcellentsupportstructuresinplaceitismybeliefthateventuallythebuckstopswiththePrincipal.Parents,staffandstudentshavemyphonenumberandifissuesremainunresolvedinspiteofeveryone'sbesteffortsIamhappytobecontacteddirectly.

  Wehavetakentheconsciousdecisiontoremainasmalllearningcommunity.Ouraimistoachieveandmaintainatotalsizeof650students,comprisingonehundredstudentsperyearlevelandfiftyinternationalstudents.Aswedonotwishtoexceedthisnumberofstudentsateachyearlevel,wewillreachthiseventualsizein2017.

  Whyremainasmallschool?

  Simplybecauseweknowthatsmallschoolscandeliveramorepersonalisedlearningexperienceandbettercarethanbigschoolscaneverdo.Don'tjusttakeourwordforitthough,tryGoogling"researchonschoolsize”andseewhattheevidencesays.Theresultsreallyareoverwhelming!

  Attitudedeterminesaltitude

  Ourattitudeisdifferent.Weinviteyoutobeaneducationalpartnerwithusintheeducationalprocess.Wehaveasayingthateverythingisnegotiableand"yes”isthedefault.Thatisnottosaythatweareinanywayslackorlaissez-fairewhenitcomestostandards.Wesimplyofferstudentsandtheirparentsandguardianstheopportunitytobeinvolvedinmakingsuggestionsanddecisionsabouttheireducationalexperience.

  TakingthestressoutofHomeworkforfamilies–Alearningpartnership

  Eachchildisdifferent,asaretheirparents'viewsonhomework,andthiswillalsodependonwhetherthestudentislikelytopursueaUniversitydegree,atradequalificationorisstillundecided.Weacceptthattherearedifferingviewsontheimportanceofhomeworkattheyoungeryearlevelsandrespectandcanaccommodatetheviewsofparents.ThosestudentstakingpartinVCEareexpectedandrequiredtocompletehomeworksoasnottonegativelyimpactontherestoftheclassbystudentsbeingunpreparedorbehind.

  Monitoringhomeworkcanbearealissueforsomefamilies.WehaveaprogramcalledRemoteMonitoredHomeworkwherestudentsinYear7-9togetherwiththeirparentsnegotiateacertainamountofhomeworkthatwillbedoneacrosstheweekinadditiontothatwhichissetbyclassteachers.TCusesarangeofeLearningsoftwaretohelpbuildskillsandidentifygapsinknowledgeinthekeyareasofLiteracyandNumeracy.ThiscommitmentisthenmonitoredcentrallybytheCollegeandcommunicatedregularlytoparents.

  NonNegotiables

  Weinsistonalearningenvironmentthatisfreeofharassment,disruptivebehaviourandracialintolerance.Instancesofongoingdisruptionthatoccurinclasswillresultinthestudentbeingremovedfromclassandparentscontacted.Likewisewedonotwanttobewastingtimedealingwiththingslikeincorrectuniformorissuesofsmokingetc.

  OurstudentsnowhaveaheadstartindevelopingtheirICTabilityandcantakeadvantageofallthelatestlearningtechnologiesavailableinalltheirclasses.TemplestowestudentsinYears7to12allhavetheirownNetbookcomputer.WeareonlythethirdGovernmentSchoolinVictoriatodothis.

  TemplestoweCollegewasthefirstschoolinVictoriatooffertheinnovativeYourTutorprogramwherestudentscanconnectwithaliveTutorlocatedaroundAustraliabetween3.00pmand10.00pmsixnightsaweektoreceiveassistancewiththeirhomework,assignmentsandstudytechniques.TheseTutorsarepostgraduatestudents,retiredorexistingteachersandcanassistwithanythingfromassistancewithaYear7EnglishessaytothehardestYear12SpecialistMathsproblem.Thefeedbackfromourstudentsandtheirrelievedparentshasbeenverypositive.

  Adynamicandfuturefocusedcurriculum

  AnewengagingcurriculumfocusingheavilyonimprovingliteracyandnumeracyinYears7to9whichasweallknowarethebuildingblockstostudentsachievingsuccessinthelateryears.

  Tohelpusdecidewhatelectivestoofferweaskedthestudentswhattheywantedtostudy.WenowofferComputerGamingDesignincooperationwithoureducationalpartner,LatrobeUniversity,WorkingwithAnimals,GeekStudieswithafocusonrobotics,Textiles,FoodTechnologyjusttonameafew.

  WhereastudentorsmallgroupofstudentshasaparticularinterestareaweencouragethemtopursuethisthroughtheSpiceItUpprogram.StaffwillassiststudentstoplanandcarryouttheirownactivityorIndividualLearningProject(ILP)aroundtheirparticularareaorinterestthatfallsoutsidetheexistingcurriculum.Wheneverstudentsdevelopaproposalforanactivitywitheducationalvaluewewilldoourbesttosupporttheminmakingithappen.RememberatTemplestowe,"Yes”isthedefault.

  PersonalisedLearning

  OnesizedoesNOTfitall-PersonalisedLearning

  Wehaveagenuineemphasisonpersonalisedlearningsothatstudentshavegreaterownershipandenjoymentinwhattheyarestudying.ManyschoolsclaimthisbutIwouldactuallyencourageyoutoaskthemhowtheyactuallydothis?AtTemplestowe,rightfromYear7,studentscanchoose30%oftheircoursethrougharangeofstudentdirectedelectives.Wealsoencourageourmoreselfdirectedstudentstodesigntheirownindividuallearningprojects,ILPsandsupporttheminthisprocess.

  In2011weintroducedthreedifferentstreamsatYear7withthestudentsdividedonthebasisoftheirpreferredlearningstyle,directinstruction,collaborativelearningandindependentacceleratedlearning.Practicallythismeansthatstudentswillbetaughtinwaystheylikeandwillbegivenadditionalsupportduringactivitiesthataretaughtinwaysthatmaycomelessnaturallytothem.Howisthatforpersonalisedlearning!

  In2012wewillintroduceafourthstreamwhichisdesignedtosupportstudentswhohavecomefromaMontessorieducationalbackground.WeareworkinginpartnershipwiththeMontessoriSecondaryEducationCentretobestmeetthesestudents'needs.

  Webelieveinsupportingstudentsatalllevelsofacademicability.WeofferVCEoverthreeyearstoenablestudentstospreadouttheiracademicprogramandforthemorecapablestudentstoattemptUnit3&4subjectsinYear11andrepeatthemagaininYear12whichtheycandowithoutpenalty.ThisenablesstudentsrepeatingsubjectstorefinetheirunderstandingthesecondtimearoundandmaximisetheirAustralianTertiaryAdmissionRank(ATAR).

  HavingthreeyearcohortsratherthantwostudyingVCEtogetherwithourfortytofiftyInternationalStudentsmeansthatwecanofferatrulybroadbasedVCEwithalargesubjectchoice.

  WeofferaselectentryVCALclass(VictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning)atYear10to12wherestudentswantingtopursueatradegainskillsinWorkRelatedskills,LiteracyandNumeracythrougharangeofpracticalhandsonactivities.

  Itissaidintheneweconomythat"Apersonwithaheadwithnohand,orhandsandnohead,isdead.”ThemostvaluableemployeesandentrepreneursinthefuturewillbethosewhohavebothacademicANDpracticalskills.WeencouragestudentsofallacademicabilitiestostronglyconsideraVocationalEducationalTraining(VET)subjectintheirUnit3&4courseload.

  WeofferVETHospitalityonsitebutcanalsoassiststudentstoaccessover28othercoursesdeliveredaspartoftheMullumandCentralClusterofschoolsandTAFEs.

  OurstaffofferafterschoolsupportinMathsandSciencethreeafternoonsperweekintheResourceCentretoassisteitherindividualsorstudygroups.

  ExtraCurricularOpportunities
