In1907,an8thgradeclasswasorganisedatGladstonePrimarySchoolforthoselookingforfurthereducation,thisclasswastitled"TheGladstoneContinuationClass".Theclassbeganwithanenrolmentofonly18,butaswordgotaround,moreparentsofthedistricthadstrongerinterestsintheclassanditsoongrewto30pupilswithinashortperiodoftime.Itwasn'tlonguntiltheschoolwasreferredtoasthe"GladstoneDistrictHighSchool",andtheHeadmasterofthetime,MrLuke,alongwithhisstaffsaidthattheschoolcarriedthepupilfromkindergartentoUniversity.
Duringtheyearsofthesecondworldwar,theJapanesehadthreatenedNorthernAustralia,manyair-raidtrencheswereduginMarch1942.Ittook70-80mentocompletethisjob,butin1945theywerefilledinandconvertedintoplayingfieldsfortheschool.WhenthewarendedonAugust15th1945,thetowncelebratedwithmarchingtothetown'sflag-polewithsingingandcheeringbystudentsalike.Theheadmastercalledforanearlydismissalof10:30amthatdaytocelebrateaspecialholiday.
The1970'sbroughtalongthebiggestchangesforGladstoneHighSchool.1972wastheyearthatthenewschoolwaserected,andduringthatyeartheschoolHeadmastergavemanystudentsbucketstogostone-pickingalongthenewgrounds.Matriculation,orfifthyear,wasintroducedin1972.
Newfurnitureandfittingsarrivedinthefirsttermofthe1973,andmostofwhichseemedunusuallookingtothestudents,suchasoddlyshapedtables,colourfulpin-upboardsetcetera,theequipmentofthe1970's.Theolderstudentswererequiredtounloadtrucksandusetheir'musclepower',allremainingstudentsstayedhomeduringthechangeoflocation.
THEHOUSES
ThefirsthousesofGladstoneHighSchooloccurredin1927.Atthetime,therewasatotalschoolattendanceof48pupils,30boysand18girls.Forthemainpurposeofsport,attendanceandworkdoneattheschool,toinstitutesomeformofintra-schoolcompetition,thestudentswereorganisedintotwogroups.These"teams"weresoongivennames,OswaldandSullivan.ThehousecaptainswereRonaldBrechin(Oswald)andBarryBarclay(Sullivan).Eachteamwasappointedwithateamcolour,Oswaldhousewithblue,andSullivanwhite.
TheInspector'sReportofApril16th,1927states:
"Aspecialfeaturethisyearistheformationoftwohouses(SullivanandOswald)namedafterareturnedV.C.andGeorgeOswald,thesecondHeadmasteroftheschool,whowaskilledatthefront."
Ascompetitiongotunderway,theHouseseachscored10pointsintennis,butOswaldleftSullivanstandinginthecricket,withawinningscoreof20toNil.Sullivanwontheacademicsidewith39to31,andwithequalattendanceof34tofinishup
ThefirsthouseshieldwasdonatedbyMrF.C.GrubbonApril27th1927,initiallywonbytheSullivanhouseinTerm2,butchangedhandsinTerm3withOswaldstealingtheshield,thusleadingthecompetitionfor1927,Oswald.
WithstudentnumberseverincreasingatGladstoneHighSchoolafterthesecondworldwar,managingthetwoexistinghouseswasprovingdifficult,itwasn'tlonguntilathirdhousewasputintoplacewiththenameofRichards,inrecognitionofMr.C.A.Richards,apreviousAssistantinchargeofGladstoneHigh,Inspectoroftheschool,andhisnamealsobeingontheschool'sRollofHonour.
Withstudentnumbersnowclimaxingtoabove160,itseemednecessarytointroduceyetanotherhouse,thistimeinthenameofMr.HaroldGale.Thisfourthhouse'Gale'beganoperationin1967withitsfirstcaptainsbeingRossKirbyandWendyBowman,latercombiningthetwohouses(Richards&Gale)backtoonly3housesforGladstoneHigh.Thosethreehouses(Oswald,Sullivan,&Richards/Gale)stillremaininusetothisveryday.
