  MerrimacStateSchoolwasopenedin1917.Theoriginaloneteacherschoolwassetinaruralenvironmentwherestudentsrodetheirhorsestoandfromschool.Theschoolhasgrownsignificantlysince1917andnowfeaturesarangeofbuildingsandfacilitieswiththeoriginalhorsepaddocknowhousingalargemultipurposecentre.Thekeyenvironmentalfeaturesofthefirstschoolcontinuetobecherishedwithanaturetrailandmajoremphasisonarangeofplants,treesandnativefloraandfauna.

  Location:

  MerrimacStateSchoolisastateprimaryschoollocatedontheQueenslandGoldCoastbetweenSurfersParadiseandtheHinterland.Theschoolwasestablishedin1917asaone-teacherschoolandhasgrownovertheyearstoaschoolwithanenrolmentof810studentscoveringPreptoYear7.Merrimacisacoeducationalschool.

  PhysicalFeatures:

  Theschoolischaracterisedbyitsoriginaloneteacherschoolbuildingwhichisbackdroppedbyabushsettingsetamidstinternationallevelgolfcourses.Allotherbuildingsarerelativelynewandareofopenplandesign.Theschoolhascarriedtheslogan‘thecountryschoolinthecity’asithasmaintainedacountryimageduringrecenturbandevelopment.APrepprogramcommencedin2008.

  Theschoolhaseightteacheraidesworkinginclassroomsandinthelearningsupportcentre.

  AnumberofvisitingspecialistssupporttheschoolincludingInterventionTeacher,SpeechTherapist,InstrumentalTeachersandAdvisoryVisitingTeachers(IntellectualImpairment,PhysicalImpairment).ThreecleanersandafulltimeandaparttimeSchoolsFacilityOfficermaintaintheschoolfacilities.SchoolmanagementischaracterisedbyaSchoolCouncil,variousSchoolCommittees,CurriculumCoordinatorsandaStudentCouncil.Seniorteachersplayanimportantroleinmanagementissues.

  Themajorityofstaffhavebeenattheschoolformanyyearsprovidingarelativelystablestaffingmix.Staffincludegraduatesthroughtoseniorteachers.Thereisahighratiooffemaletomaleteachers.Themajorityofstaffisactiveinpursuingprofessionaldevelopment.

  Teachingpracticesvaryfromcooperativeteachingthroughtosingleclasseswithsomecompositeclasses.Cooperativeplanningandteachingisencouraged.Theschoolstaffisverysupportiveandprofessionalintheirapproachandcommittedtothestudentsandcommunity.

  Thestudentclienteleischaracterisedbyamixofmiddleclassandsolesupportingfamilies.ThemajorityoftheschoolpopulationisstablewithmanyfamiliespassinglocalschoolstoattendMerrimac.

  TheschoolservicesawideareaincludingthecommunitiesofMerrimac,Merridown,Cararra,Worongary,Nerang,ClearIslandWaters,Robina,MermaidWatersandMudgeeraba.ThereareanincreasingnumberofstudentsfromsouthernstatesandNewZealand.ThirteenstudentscurrentlyidentifyasAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanders.Approximately12%ofthestudentpopulationaccessarangeofeducationalservicesandsupportsuchas:-LearningSupport;Year2NetSupportandYear5-7Intervention;GuidanceOfficer;SpeechLanguagePathologist;EducationalAdjustmentProgramsandEnglishasaSecondLanguage.

  AnactiveSpecialNeedsCommitteecatersforlearningsupportstudentsandstudentsonEducationalAdjustmentProgramsintheareaofintellectualimpairment,autisticspectrumdisorderandspeechandlanguageimpairment.AsmallgroupofstudentsaresupportedbyavisitingEnglishasaSecondLanguageTeacher.

  AtMerrimacStateSchoolweplaceagreatdealofemphasisonstudentleadership.Whetheritisataclasslevel,intheplayground,atsportingactivitiesoratawholeschoollevel,wetrytodevelopleadershipskillsandresponsibilityinallourstudents.Ourstudentleaderpositionsconsistoffourstudentleaders,eightsportscaptains,Years6and7StudentCouncilmembers,Years4to7ClassCaptains,BandLeadersandourYears5and6PlaygroundPals.

  CurriculumPrograms:

  CurriculumofferingsincludeEnglish,Mathematics,Science,StudiesofSocietyandEnvironment,Art,PhysicalEducationandMusic.Anintegratedoutcomesapproachtoplanninghasbeenidentifiedasaschoolpriority.JapaneseistaughttoallstudentsinYears5,6and7.Year4alsotookpartinintroductoryJapaneselessons.SwimmingisofferedtoallyearlevelswithinterschoolsportavailabletoYears5-7.Theschooliscontinuingtodevelopitscurriculumframeworkwithafocusonintegratedoutcomesplanning.

  Year2NetInterventionisprovidedforstudentsinYears2and3.Theschoolhasamplephysicalresourcesandaverywellresourcedschoolresourcecentre.InformationTechnologyisamajorsystemicprioritywithaLocalAreaNetworkcompletedin1999andvideoconferencingfacilitiesestablishedin2003.AnICTCentrewascompletedin2005andincludedstateoftheartvideoconferencingequipment.Theinternetisavailableinallclassrooms.ApproximatelyonethirdofthecomputerhardwarewithintheschoolisleasedthroughEducationQueensland.Thisensuresthemostuptodateequipmentpossibleforthestudents.In2009allclassroomswereairconditionedandinteractivewhiteboardswereinstalledinallmajorteachingareas.

  SupportiveSchoolEnvironment:

  Theschool’sbehaviourmanagementprogramfocusesontheprovisionofasafeandsupportiveenvironment.Itencouragesstudentstostrivetoimprovetheirbehaviourthroughrewardingandacknowledgingpositivebehaviour.
