Glossop-What'sinaname?
ThesettlementofGlossop,establishedshortlyafterWorldWarI,wasnamedafterCaptainJohnT.C.Glossop,CommanderofH.M.A.S.Sydney,andheroofAustralia'sfirstnavalbattle.AttheoutbreakofWorldWarI,theGermanlightbattlecruiserEmdenwhichwasvisitingtheChinesecoast,headedtoseatofightasalonewolfraider.Duringtheensuingthreemonths,theEmdencreateddevastationamongAlliedshippingandbyearlyNovember1914hadsunkfifteenBritishShips,andhadcapturedandsetfreeafurtherfivevessels,hadraidedPenang(Malaya),andhadshelledtheoiltanksofMadras(India).On9November1914,aconvoytransportingAustraliantroopstoEgyptreceivedasignalfromaradiofacilityatCocosIslandwarningoftheapproachofa"strangewarship".TheSydney,underGlossop'scaptaincy,wasdirectedtoinvestigatethematter.
Some2?hourslater,themoremodernandbetterequippedSydneyjoinedbattlewiththeEmden.Outgunning,andhavingsufferedappallingcasualtiesamonghiscrew,CaptainVonMuller,commanderoftheEmden,orderedthatthewarshipbegrounded.TheSydneysubsequentlytookonboard182prisonersincluding65badlywoundedmen.CaptainGlossoprequestedthatoutofrespectforthemaimedanddyingcaptives,theAlliedtroopsrefrainfromcheeringastheshipreturnedtotheconvoy.
CaptainGlossopwassubsequentlyinterviewedinColombo,Ceylon(nowSirLanka),byAustralianpoetandwarcorrespondent,A.B."Banjo"Paterson,whocommented:"WecanhardlybelievethatAustralia'sfirstnavalengagementcouldhavebeensuchasensationalwin,forournavy-wasnevertakenseriously.AndnowwehavesunkaGermanship."(A.B."Banjo"Paterson,HappyDispatches,1980).PatersonfoundGlossop"…atypicalEnglishSailor-man,notabitexcitedbythefactthathehas'wokeuptofindhimselffamous'".Glossophimselfwashorrifiedatthemayhemofmodernwarfareandremarkedthat"I'veseenmyfirstnavalaction…andallIcansayis,thankGodwedidn'tstartthewar."

GlossopHighSchool'soriginscommencewiththatgenerationofpioneerswhoarrivedinBerri,BarmeraandadjacentdistrictsintheperiodsurroundingWorldWarI,andthosenumbersincludedreturningsoldierssettledintheregionafterwar.FollowingWorldWarI,mostoftheburdenofsoldiersettlement,supposedlyaCommonwealthresponsibility,felluponthestates.In1919,theSouthAustralianParliamentpassedanActtoallowfortheallocationofproductivelandtoreturnedsoldiersinvariousregionsofSouthAustralia.AnumberofreturnedsoldiersarrivedintheRiverlandtoclaimtheirallotments,somespendingseveralyearsonotherworkbeforetheirlandwasavailable.
LifeintheRiverlandofthiserawasnotforthefainthearted.Pioneeringfamilieswereconfrontedwitharangeofimmediateproblemsincludinglackofhousing,poortransport,andadearthofretail,medicalandcivicfacilities,aswellasanisolationwhichmanyfoundmentallycrippling.
ThepioneeringsettlersofBerri,Barmeraandthesurroundingdistrictswhohavingovercomethetribulations,hardshipsandcrushingreversesoftheprevioustwentyyearsweretouniteandpressforaccesstoqualitysecondaryeducationfortheirchildrenintheRiverland.ThedeterminationandspiritwhichmotivatedtheireffortsnotonlyresultedinthebirthofGlossopHigh,andtheappointmentofanextraordinarilycapablegroupofteachers,butwastoinstillwithintheschoolofcamaraderieandsenseofachievementwhichwastocharacteriseGlossopHighSchoolformanyyearstocome.
