  TheCentre'ssupportivemulticulturallearningenvironmentencouragesallstudentstofeelateaseintheirnewcountryandtoquicklyacquireEnglishlanguageskills,beforemovingontothewiderexperienceofasecondaryschool.

  TheCentre

  ChatswoodIntensiveEnglishCentre(IEC)ispartofthenetworkofIntensiveEnglishCentresprovidedbytheNSWDepartmentofEducationandTraining.

  NewlyarrivedstudentswhoseEnglishskillsareassessedasbeinginsufficientforsuccessfulplacementinhighschoolclassesattendtheCentretodeveloptheirlanguageskillsandpreparethemforattendanceathighschool.Studentsattendfivedaysaweekduringschoolterms.

  TheCentreissituatedinthegroundsofChatswoodHighSchoolinCentennialAvenue,afewminuteswalkfromChatswoodRailwayStation,busstopsandthePacificHighway.

  Programme

  ThebasicfunctionofthecentreistoteachtheEnglishskillsnecessarytosuccessfullystudythehighschoolcurriculum.Aswellaslanguageclasses,theprogrammeincludeslanguageacrossthecurriculuminthemainhighschoolsubjects:Science,Maths,Geography,History,LivingSkills,Art,etc.sothatthesubjectlanguageandconceptsaredeveloped.TheprogrammealsoincludesPE,Sport,ComputerSkills,MusicandLibrary.Excursionstoplacesofeducationalbenefitandinterestareorganisedeachtermtohelpstudentssettleintotheirnewcommunity.

  Somestudentsfromrefugeebackgroundshaveinterruptedorlittleschoolingandmaybeilliterateintheirownlanguage.Wherenecessary,remedialprogrammessuchasbasicreading,scriptwritingandnumeracyareprovidedbythestaffattheCentre,andaresupportedbybilingualteachers'aides.

  EnrolmentProcedure

  Allnon-EnglishspeakingstudentswishingtoenrolingovernmenthighschoolsinthenorthernSydneyarea(i.e.studentslivinginsuburbsnorthofSydneytotheCentralCoastandasfarwestasVictoriaRoad,Ryde)needtotelephonetheCentre(9411-5288)foranassessmentappointment.BilingualstaffcanassistparentswithenquiriesinMandarin,Cantonese,Korean,Japanese,Thai,etc.Attheassessmentthestudent'svisawillbecheckedtoensurethatthestudentiseligibletoenrolandthestudent'sskillsinreading,writing,listeningandspeakingEnglishwillbeassessed.

  AftertheassessmentthosewiththeappropriateEnglishskillsarereferredtotherelevanthighschoolforenrolment.MoststudentsassessedasneedingtoattendtheCentremaycommenceclassesattheIECthenextday.

  StudentswhoaretemporaryvisaholderswillneedtohaveanAuthoritytoEnrolissuedbytheInternationalBusinessUnit(IBU)beforetheycancommenceattendance.MostofthesestudentswillalsoneedtopayafeetotheIBU.TheIECwillprovidesuchstudentswiththenecessaryforms,informationanddocumentation.

  Attheassessment,thefunctioningoftheCentreisexplainedtothestudent'sfamilyandinformationaboutuniformrequirementsandtravelarrangementsisgiven.BasicinformationabouttheNSWeducationsystemisalsoprovided.Parentsorguardiansareaskedtogiveinformationaboutthestudent'seducationalbackground,abilitylevel,specialinterestsandgoalstoassisttheteachersastheyworkwiththestudents.

  CentreOrganisation

  Basedontheassessmentoftheirlanguageskills,studentsareplacedinoneoffourlevels:Foundation,Level1,Level2andLevel3.StudentsareexpectedtocompleteLevel3beforetheytransfertohighschool.Eachlevelcoversaterm'swork(eachtermisapproximatelytenweeks).Withineachlevelthestudentsaredividedintoclasses-usuallytherearebetween10to18studentsineachgroup.Theclassesineachlevelarebasedonthestudents'ages.

  Theaveragelengthofstayisapproximatelythree(3)terms,althoughsomestudentswhoencounterdifficultylearningEnglish(possiblybecauseofpreviouslyinterruptedschooling,nopreviousknowledgeofEnglish,etc.)mayneedalongertimetobenefitfromtheprogrammesattheCentre.theCentrecatersforindividualdifferencesandadaptstheprogrammetotheneedsofeachgroupand/orindividual.

  Attheendofeachtermagroupofstudents,havingcompletedLevel3,leavestheCentretogotohighschool.Studentsintheotherlevelsarepromotedatthebeginningofthenexttermprovidedtheyhavesuccessfullydevelopedthenecessaryskills.Theprogressofstudentsismonitoredatweeklystaffmeetings.

  TheStaff

  TeachersarequalifiedandexperiencedEnglishasaSecondLanguogeteachers,manywithqualificationsandexperienceteachinginhighschoolcurriculumareas.Maths,Science,HistoryandGeographyofAustraliaandLiteraturearetaughtwitheachstudent'slanguagedifficultiesbeingcateredfor.Bi-lingualsupportisgivenbyTeachers'Aides.

  Aboveallthestaffrespondtotheneedsofindividualstudentsinadaptingrelevantprogrammesrelatedtotheirfutureaswellaspresentrequirements.Aschoolcounsellorisavailableeverydaytoassistanystudentorparenttodealwithdifficultiesarisingfromthedemandsofresettlement.

  ParentInvolvement

  Parent/TeachernightsareheldattheendofTerms1and3.Atthese,teachersarrangeappointmentstotalkwithparentsindividuallyabouttheirchild.AwrittenreportisissuedtoparentsattheendofTerms2and4.Inaddition,parentscanatanytimerequestaninterviewwithstafftodiscusstheirchild'sprogress.parentsarewelcometovisittheCentreatanytimebutareparticularlyinvitedtoattendspecialactivitiessuchassportscarnivals,Graduationceremoniesandexcursions,etc.

  TransfertoHighSchool

  Duringthestudent'sfinaltermattheIEC,thecounsellorarrangesplacementforeachstudentinahighschoolinthelocalarea.Mosthighschoolswillonlytakestudentslivingintheirlocalarea-specialapplicationsmustbelodgedforplacementatnon-localhighschools.TheIECwillassistfamilieswhowishtomakesuchapplications.Studentsareenrolledintheyearlevelappropriatetotheirpreviouseducation.

  Awrittenreportoutliningthestudent'slanguageabilityandknowledgeincoresubjectsisgiventokeypersonnelatthereceivinghighschoolwhenthestudenttransfersfromtheIEC.
